Colleague Handbook
In this document the following terms shall be understood as follows:
Is an inclusive term for those who are directly employed by the charity (formally known as Employees).
(For the purpose of calculating periods of service) means twelve calendar months from the date of appointment to Barnardo’s service.
(For the purpose of calculating sick pay entitlement) means the period of twelve consecutive calendar months immediately preceding the first day of absence.
‘Discretionary’ benefits are benefits which can be removed or changed by Barnardo’s.
Means the sickness benefit payable or deemed to be payable at the appropriate current rate, i.e. at the appropriate rate for the person concerned. Financial year This runs from 1st April to 31st March.
This is a period of one calendar month. Statutory deductions Means such deductions from salary as may be applicable in any instance through the operation of some statute or regulation e.g. for income tax.
For the calculation of benefits or rights under employment legislation means paid employment with Barnardo’s without any break in service.
Definitions of ‘Barnardo’s Service’ for the calculation of annual leave entitlement, discretionary sick pay benefit and to qualify for benefit under Barnardo’s maternity/adoption schemes are set out in the table opposite, effective from the latest start date shown.

Barnardo’s aggregated service – exception for eligible female colleagues. For female colleagues who left Barnardo’s employment on account of pregnancy, and who have not been in permanent employment in the intervening period, the earlier employment will be taken into account provided the break in service does not exceed eight years.
